English Idioms for Reacting to Stress

8 English Idioms for Reacting to Stress

September 29, 2026•5 min read

We all have days when stress affects the way we speak to other people. You might respond more sharply than you meant to, keep your feelings inside for too long, or need a moment before you can talk calmly.

English speakers have expressions for each of these situations. If someone says they’ve “been bottling things up,” they’ve been holding back their feelings. If they need to “clear their head,” they might need a moment to feel calmer and think more clearly.

In this lesson, you’ll learn 8 natural expressions for talking about stress, with examples to help you understand when and how to use them.

A: Hey, can we talk about what happened this morning?

B: Of course. I’m really sorry I snapped at you.

A: I know you are stressed, but you can’t take it out on me.

B: You’re right. I’ve been bottling everything up, and I completely lost my cool. I thought I was going to have a meltdown.

A: Maybe next time you could take a breather before responding.

B: Yeah, I probably need to go for a walk and clear my head.

A: Exactly. That might help you blow off some steam.

B: Definitely. And again, I’m really sorry. It won’t happen again.
