Francini’s Success Story: C1 on the Cambridge Exam

How My Student Got C1 on the Cambridge Exam

My student Francini got C1 on the Cambridge exam, and I couldn’t be prouder.

For those unfamiliar, C1 and C2 are the highest levels of English proficiency you can achieve. They represent advanced fluency — the kind of English that opens doors to universities, careers, and international opportunities.

The Beginning

Fran started taking lessons with me when she was around 11 years old. I remember how excited she was to practice English with a native speaker.

When we first began, she already had a solid foundation but was still at an intermediate level. Over time, she became more comfortable telling me about her life — especially her love for Taylor Swift, her equestrian competitions, and her dream of becoming a doctor (which is why she loves Grey’s Anatomy so much!).

In our lessons, we focused on correcting recurring mistakes, expanding her vocabulary, refining her pronunciation, and strengthening her fluency. Slowly but consistently, her confidence grew.

One of my favorite memories with Francini was visiting her in Brazil. After years of working together online, we finally got to meet in person. We walked through the botanical garden with her mom and my wife, enjoying the beautiful scenery and catching up outside of our usual lessons. Afterward, we shared a traditional Brazilian lunch together.

There’s something incredibly special about meeting a student in real life after spending so much time helping them grow online. Being able to give her a real hug and spend time with her progress face-to-face is a moment I’ll always hold close to my heart.

Building Advanced Skills

During that time, Francini was chosen to be a Brazilian ambassador for a NASA-related event that she attends annually. She later told me that our lessons helped her develop the English conversation skills and confidence she needed to earn that opportunity.

As her English continued to improve, Francini began thinking more seriously about her long-term goals. Since she aspires to attend medical school abroad, most universities require proof of an advanced English level through a certified exam. For that reason, she decided to prepare for the Cambridge C1 exam, one of the most widely recognized English certifications in the world.

To prepare, we worked through Cambridge-style practice questions together. Many came naturally to her, but others were more challenging and pushed her to think critically.

When she struggled, we didn’t just move on.
We analyzed why certain answers were correct.
We strengthened her understanding of collocations.
We expanded her academic vocabulary.

That depth of preparation made the difference.

Taking the Cambridge Exam

After months of preparation, it was finally time for the exam.

She felt nervous, but she answered each question carefully and to the best of her ability. Then she turned in her exam and waited anxiously to see if she had reached her C1 goal.

When the results finally arrived, she opened them with her heart racing. For a split second, she held her breath, and then she saw it: C1!

She started jumping around in excitement and couldn’t wait to tell me the good news.

She messaged me right away, saying she was “ecstatic and really relieved that she had accomplished her goal.”

The moment I read that text, I was overjoyed that she wanted to share and celebrate her success with me. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that the years we spent building her fluency truly paid off. Moments like that are exactly why I love teaching, because I get to help students turn their goals into reality.

What's Next for Francini?

Before even graduating from high school, Francini achieved a certified advanced level in English from one of the most recognized exams in the world. This accomplishment moves her one step closer to her dream of studying medicine abroad.

Francini is bright, disciplined, and ambitious. I’m no longer her teacher, but I'm honored to have been part of her journey.

I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next. I know there are only great things ahead!
