1. Put (Something) Back

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to return something to its original place.

Examples:

  • I put the milk back in the fridge.

  • Please put the book back on the shelf.

Meaning 2 (informal): to drink a large amount, especially alcohol.

Examples:

  • He can really put some beers back.

  • They were putting them back all night at the party.


2. Put (Something) Down

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to place something on a surface.

Examples:

  • I put down the phone.

  • She put down her bag on the table.

Meaning 2: to criticize or insult someone.

Examples:

  • He kept putting me down in front of everyone.

  • Don’t put people down just because they made a mistake.


3. Put (Something) In

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to place something inside something else.

Examples:

  • I put the key in the lock.

  • She put the letter in the envelope.

Meaning 2: to invest time, effort, or work into something.

Examples:

  • She put in a lot of time preparing for the presentation.

  • If you put in the effort, you will improve your English.


4. Put (Something/Someone) Off

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to delay or postpone something.

Examples:

  • I put off washing the dishes.

  • They put off the meeting until next week.

Meaning 2: to discourage someone or make someone lose interest.

Examples:

  • The high price put a lot of customers off.

  • His rude behavior really put me off.


5. Put (Something) On

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to dress yourself in something.

Examples:

  • I put on my shirt.

  • She put on a jacket because it was cold.

Meaning 2: to organize or present an event, show, or performance.

Examples:

  • The school is putting on a play next month.

  • They put on a great concert last night.


6. Put (Something) Out

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to stop something from burning.

Examples:

  • I put out the fire.

  • The firefighters quickly put out the flames.

Meaning 2: to publish or produce something.

Examples:

  • The company put out a new product this year.

  • The band just put out a new album.


7. Put (Something) Together

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to assemble or build something.

Examples:

  • I put the toy together.

  • He put together the furniture in the living room.

Meaning 2: to organize or create something using different parts.

Examples:

  • She put together a great presentation.

  • They put together a plan for the project.


8. Put Up With (Something/Someone)

Type: Inseparable

Meaning: to tolerate something unpleasant.

Examples:

  • I put up with my partner’s snoring.

  • She refuses to put up with rude customers.


9. Put (Something) Up

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to place something on a wall or in a high position.

Examples:

  • I put up the picture on the wall.

  • They put up new curtains in the windows.


10. Put (Something) Away

Type: Separable

Meaning 1: to store something in its proper place.

Examples:

  • I put the coffee away.

  • Please put your toys away after playing.

Meaning 2: to save money for the future.

Examples:
